Django & The Million Things I Do

While I seem to have seriously neglected this site for quite some time now, I am giving thought to it’s rebirth. I am unsure exactly what turn I will take with it, but it is in for a serious redesign at some point. (I just, as always, have to find the time to do it.)

In the mean time, I’m working on Django! :) Well, that is to say that I’m learning it; and in the process I am developing a minute amount of experience in Python. (Which is nice, since I’ve been saying that I was going to learn that particular language for several years now.)

What projects do I have in store for the new framework / programming language? Well, I really have no idea. I doubt that I will replace the existing CMS on my site (WordPress), since that’s just so darn handy and easily maintainable, and has required little to no attention from me whatsoever for the past while. (Perhaps that’s the problem?)

At any rate, I continue my work over at URU Exploration, developing the MO:URU Live fan-site, which will be launched to a new address at http://www.uruexploration.net in the next few weeks. (I’m rather looking forward to it.) As it is, between that and other projects that I’m working on, I don’t exactly have a lot of spare time to work on all the things I want to. (Broken record, I know.) :)

I am working on one project in Django, however, that once I get it put together and working much the way I’d like it to, I may even post for download: A Project Log application for tracking one’s hours spent on a project.

I realize this isn’t exactly the most unique app in he world, however, it’ll be decent enough that I expect I will be able to integrate it into a billing system that I also am now thinking of constructing.

Well, I’ve likely ranted long enough here for one sit. I’ll be off to the land of nod for this evening, though I may be back here in the near future. We’ll have to see.

URU Exploration, Mortality Guild, & Trac

The past several months have kept me busy developing, designing, and learning new tricks. :)

My best achievement so far has been the new design that I’ve implemented on the URU Exploration website. (A fan-based website for the new Myst Online: URU Live MMORPG.) The site takes advantage of one of the common interfaces in the game (that of turning the page of a book), to display the content that is posted to the site using a WordPress blog.

Thanks to JavaScript, CSS, and a whole lot of time, I’ve also been able to put together (with a little help from Brendan Dorr), an Imager for the website. This item is essentially a slideshow that is displayed in the form of another interface commonly found in the game.

Check it out here: URU Exploration

GuildAxis.net, (on which I have developed URU Exploration), is another project that has kept me clicking away at the keys for a couple weeks now. The object is to put together a collection of softwares to offer services for guilds or other community-based groups. The target consumer for this software at the moment is a World of Warcraft guild; and to that, Mortality Guild has signed on to beta test. In the next few days we should be releasing a primary domain name for them, but for the time being, you can find them at http://mortalityguild.guildaxis.net

Trac

This handy collection of tools continues to be a great source of “sanity-keeping” for me. Thanks to this project management software from Edgewall Software, I now have several sites set up to maintain the projects I am working on.

Currently, these are listed at http://trac.chrisbraybrook.com

GMS - Guild Bank Manager v0.1-beta

Although it’s been a long time in coming, there is finally a new version of the Guildaxis.net Guild Bank Manager available. It’s a beta version, but I personally feel that it’s actually quite stable.

At the moment, there are a few small issues with it such as the automated point attribution system, which is scheduled for a revamp in the next release. However, that’s why it’s a beta! :) Anyone who’s interested in testing out this software and reporting on its bugs, can do so. You’ll find the archive here:

and at any point, should you run across something that needs a bug report or other sort of ticket, please submit it at the following address. (Remember to fill in your e-mail address.):

The software’s development is moving along quite well at the moment, despite the lack of developers for the project. My hope is that in the future we’ll be able to get more people on board the project, and that then we’ll start seeing some faster paced development and more add-ons / plugins.

For the time being, please make sure that you check it out! Especially if you’re in the line of setting up a Guild Bank site for your WOW Guild. (Currently, that’s the primary focus of the software.) Information on editing the configuration file is available here: GbmConfigFile; and the sql statements required for setting up the default database architecture with default data can be found in this ticket: #103

Any questions or comments can be forwarded to web_projects@chrisbraybrook.com

Getting Close!

Well, it’s crunch time on development for the Guild Bank Manager. The plan is to move the software into proper beta testing at the end of the month, and there’s still a few tickets left to handle.

So, if anyone out there would like to dabble in a little php and help out with the development, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Check out the Trac site at http://trac.chrisbraybrook.com/wowgbm or download a working copy of the code at: svn://cbrooks.chrisbraybrook.com/cvs/wowgbm
(Submit any changes as patches through the ticketing system.)

Cheerio!

P.S. This software is going to go OpenSource, so any donated work gets full credit.

WOW Guild Bank Manager

Just a short entry about this for the time being. Currently, the Guild Bank Manager is in v5.0.5, and is being used to host a couple of Guild’s item directories. If anyone is interested in checking these sites out, they can stop by http://www.guildbank.ca or http://wowgbm.chrisbraybrook.com. (The latter is currently undergoing a revamp, but should be up relatively shortly.)
